The Greeks of Vila Pery (Mozambique) in the 1890s
(Excerpt from the book ‘The Greek community in Mozambique’)
Apart from those who settled in Beira in the late 19th century, a few Greeks settled in Vila Pery and were involved in farming. They leased plots along the railway line towards the border with Rhodesia. It is estimated that the total area occupied by the Greeks was almost 40,000 acres. Some of the Greek pioneers were the brothers Dimitris, Paul and Panagiotis Babiolakis, Eugenios Koutsis, Kostas and
Kyriakos Katsoulis and others.
